Business and Tourism Economist

Christos Petreas is a Business and Tourism Economist and EU Senior Expert for Regional Development and Business, Tourism, and Education Researcher – Consultant; educated in two USA universities, after working for more than 15 years abroad (USA, England, Africa), he is active since 1990 based in Greece, advising governmental, public and private sector entities in Greece and abroad, and has been particularly involved with tourism development and tourism marketing issues, SME’s development and European programmes, and has served as Team Leader on a number of EU Technical Assistance Programs to various governments, while, concurrently, he has been holding academic positions in many Greek and foreign universities and educational institutions, teaching primarily tourism and management courses. Among >70 projects and studies in strategy, development planning and marketing within the tourism sector (>120 overall), he has been particularly interested in the development of various special interest (alternative) forms of tourism, tourism destination quality and cultural tourism, among which extensively with religious tourism for more than ten years. Among other appointments, he is currently Member, and Tourism Advisor, of the Synodical Committee for Pilgrimage Tours of the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, he is active in promotion of religious shrines and monuments and pilgrimage activities; he has authored (total >200 items) books, chapters, papers, among which many articles on religious tourism development; he is Contributing Editor for Religious Tourism to the Greek weekly published newspaper “ORTHODOXI ALHTHEIA” and Member of the Industry Advisory Board of the International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage and participates since 2000 in The Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage Expert Group.
